Rafael Nadal landing investment aces off court as holding company’s profits double
The tennis player’s investment firm, Aspemir, had a turnover of €20 million in 2021 through around 20 companies in various sectors
Tennis superstar Rafael Nadal, who has won 22 Grand Slam titles during his career, is replicating that success off the courts. The Spaniard, who has investments in numerous companies, earned €11.4 million ($12.35 million) in 2021 through his holding company Aspemir, 102% more than a year earlier, according to the company’s latest accounts presented to the Mercantile Registry. Nadal owns or invests in companies across several sectors including sports, real estate, hotels, renewable energy and brokerage, and has even worked as a producer on Netflix series such as Soy Georgina, which focuses on the life of Cristiano Ronaldo’s partner Georgina Rodríguez, and Tamara Falcó: La Marquesa, which looks at the Spanish aristocrat, through Mabel Capital.
Through Aspemir, Nadal controls 20 companies. The tennis player’s mother, Ana María Parera, appears as sole administrator in the holding and his father, Sebastián Nadal, as proxy, as reflected by the business consulting tool Insight View. The holding company’s turnover also improved by 15% to €20.75 million in 2021. Of that turnover, €12.6m came from abroad. Aspemir’s 2021 result also benefited from currency exchange differences in its favor of €3.3 million.
The main company that Aspemir controls the Centre Esportiu Manacor, located in Nadal’s hometown of Manacor, in Mallorca, where it owns and operates the sports facilities and accommodation linked to the Rafa Nadal Academy. Centre Esportiu Manacor had a turnover of €19.7 million (up 40.9% year-on-year) in 2021 and a profit of €2.3 million. Aspemir, which is also headquartered in Manacor, holds €229 million ($248 million) in net equity.
Nadal has won a total of 92 titles during his career, earning $134.6 million in prize money, according to the ATP. He also has numerous commercial agreements with brands including Kia, Movistar, Heliocare, Santander, Mapfre and Nike.
Among the best-known companies in which Aspemir invests is Mabel Capital, in which it has a 33.3% share. This firm developed luxury apartments in the Plaza de la Villa de París in Madrid and has projects in the Costa del Sol, Portugal, and California. It is also the owner of the successful Tatel restaurants, with branches in Madrid, Ibiza, Valencia and six other cities around the world. Mabel also invests in Komodo, the production company behind the Mad Cool music festival and Netflix series Soy Georgina and Tamara Falcó: La Marquesa.
Aspemir has also intensified its interests in the hotel world: at the end of 2022, together with the Meliá chain, it presented the new ZEL brand, which plans to open 20 hotels in five years. Nadal’s holding company also has commercial and residential properties and plots of land in Madrid, Barcelona, and different locations in Mallorca, including Manacor, Palma, Porto Cristo, Puerto de Alcudia and the Sa Coma urbanization.
