Rauw Alejandro confirms his breakup with Rosalía ‘a few months ago’
A day after ‘People’ magazine announced the split, the Puerto Rican has been quick to clarify there were no infidelities
It has taken just over 24 hours to confirm what was no longer even an open secret, as at least one of the protagonists of the most high-profile split of the summer has spoken out. Rauw Alejandro, the 30-year-old Puerto Rican former fiancé of Rosalía, 30, has explained on Twitter — to his 2.6 million followers — and Instagram — to more than 18 million — that his engagement to the Barcelona singer is off.
The artist explained that he wanted to share this difficult moment with his followers because they have been with him throughout his career. Yet, in his statement, what is most striking is its timing: “A few months ago, Rosi and I ended our engagement,” says the singer whose real name is Raul Alejandro Ocasio Ruiz, raising more than a few eyebrows as images were published of the couple not that long ago and the engagement was only announced at the end of March via a joint video clip for the song Beso.
In June, Rosalía was asked on the Spanish TV chat show, El Hormiguero, about her wedding plans. “It looks like there’s going to be a wedding,” she confirmed. “At the moment I have to finish the tour and I’ll get onto it when I return. I have some dresses lined up,” she added, laughing and sounding excited. Also in June, Rauw posted a video on TikTok in which he did a jokey imitation of Rosalía. And just three weeks ago, they were exchanging public messages on social networks.
But in his social media statement regarding the break-up, the singer of Todo de ti began saying, “You have been part of my professional achievements all these years, as well as sharing all the happy moments we’ve had as a couple. I never began to imagine that I would have to give public statements about something that’s so private to me.”
The message was then directed to fans: “Yes, a few months ago, Rosi and I ended our engagement. There are thousands of things that can cause people to split, but in our case it was not due to third parties or infidelity. As I am getting my head around all this, erroneous public allegations have been made, and because of the respect I have for her, for our families and for everything in our lives, I can’t remain silent and watch how they try to destroy the most real love story that God has allowed me to live. That’s all I have to say about it, to my fans I love you very much, thank you for being there.” The singer ended the tweet by signing off with his real name, Raúl.
Rauw’s mention of infidelity and “public allegations” is an allusion to the multiple messages and long threads accusing him of cheating that have been published on Twitter recently. These suggest that the singer has had affairs with various women behind Rosalía’s back, though there appears to be no hard evidence of this.
Rosalía has remained silent on the subject; she was seen the night of July 25 performing at the Lollapalooza festival in Paris, greeting fans, and wearing sunglasses the following morning in the French capital. She had just finished her Motomami tour, and shortly before the split was made public in an exclusive by People magazine, she had shared a post on Instagram thanking various people for the success of the tour, saying “to God, my family, my team and all of you who support me in my life.” But there was no mention of Rauw Alejandro, which puzzled fans.
Rosalía and Rauw Alejandro announced their engagement in a video clip showing him giving her a ring after a year and a half together. The rumors that the two were together began in mid-2021. But the first time the couple actually went public was in September 2021, during Rosalía’s birthday celebrations, when she could be seen at her Miami home with Rauw, dancing and even sleeping. Since then, the couple have posed together on red carpets and at awards shows, from LOS40 Music Awards to the Latin Grammy Awards, and have put their love and affection for each other on display, most publicly in the three songs they made together, Beso, Vampiro and Promesas.
