The Tony Awards are considered the most important celebration in the world of live theater. They honor outstanding achievements in Broadway productions, showcasing the best performances, direction, design, and writing in both plays and musicals. The 76th edition of the awards will take place on June 11 at the United Palace in New York City. It will recognize productions from the 2022-23 season, including the new adaptation of Some Like it Hot, as well as Ain’t No Mo’ and Leopoldstadt, both tied for the most nominated play.

The most nominated show is Some Like it Hot, based on the 1959 Marilyn Monroe film. Booked by Matthew López (The Inheritance) with music by Marc Shaiman (both nominated), it follows the story of jazz age musicians struggling during the Prohibition era. J. Harrison Ghee, who plays Jerry/Daphne, received a nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical, making them one of the first non-binary performers to be nominated for the Tony Awards. The show is also nominated for Best Musical. In total, it has 12 nominations. It could potentially win all of them after achieving the feat at the Drama Desk Awards 2023, winning all eight awards for which it was nominated.

In the play categories, Jordan E. Cooper, the youngest Black American playwright on Broadway, has a double nomination for Ain’t No Mo’, his story set in an alternate present where the U.S. puts forward a program to buy every Black person in America, who whishes, a one-way ticket to Africa. In total, the play has six nominations, tied with Leopoldstadt, penned by British playwright Sir Tom Stoppard. Leopoldstadt focuses on a Jewish family in Vienna who fled the East, covering several years from 1899 to 1955.
