The love story of Becky G and Sebastian Lletget: infidelities, lies and a missing ring
The couple, who have been together for six years, got engaged in December. But after another woman claimed to have had a tryst with the soccer player, he recognized that he crossed boundaries and promised that he will regain the artist’s trust
The last week hasn’t been easy for the singer Becky G, born Rebecca Marie Gomez in Inglewood, California. Just a few days ago, images went viral of an unknown woman insisting that she had a sexual encounter in a Madrid club with the artist’s boyfriend, soccer player Sebastian Lletget. The couple has been dating for six years and engaged for three months. The anonymous woman wanted to send the singer photos and videos of the moment.
The Football Club Dallas player was the first to break the silence. He denied the anonymous account. In an Instagram post, however, he confirmed that he “push[ed] right up to the boundaries of lines that should never be crossed.” Several hours after the post, Becky G appeared at the iHeartRadio Music award ceremony, held in Los Angeles on Monday night, without her engagement ring.
All traces of the Instagram account that denounced the supposed cheating have now disappeared. In it, though, the woman shared screenshots of conversations with the soccer player and videos from the party. “You aren’t going to silence me, Sebastian Lletget,” she wrote in one of the posts. Little by little, the information spread across social media. Eventually, the soccer player posted on Instagram his version of the events, addressing his fans and erstwhile fiancé. “During a moment I regret deeply, a 10 minute lapse in judgment resulted in an extortion plot. Since this person did not get what they wanted it has now become a public social media spectacle filled with more lies than any truth and false posts aimed at the love of my life, the one person who I should never take for granted or put at risk,” he explained.
“While this anonymous internet stalker — who I never met, unlike they claimed — had an ultimate goal that was not clear, for me it has been a wake-up call. The loudest alarm of my life. I can’t keep running from demons. I know that any actions made that put us here should have never happened to begin with. Pushing right up to the very boundaries of lines that should never be crossed only hurts me and the people I love most,” he wrote.
In addition to confessing his infidelity, Lletget also publicly named the problems he is facing: “I have half-heartedly been participating in therapy, knowing I have deeply rooted anger and mental health issues that require the same commitment and treatment that I devote to my physical well-being. If I am to be the man I aspire to be, I have to do better. I have decided to commit myself to a mental wellness program to work on the parts of me that deeply need healing.”
For the time being, the other party, the artist Becky G, has not made a statement, despite attending an awards ceremony on Monday. It was her first public appearance after the cheating accusations, and she received an award for her song “Mammiii.” Though she has remained silent, her actions spoke clearly: she appeared without the engagement ring that Lletget gave her last December.
After a six-year relationship, which began in 2016, the soccer player proposed to the “Sin Pijama” singer. “I once had a dream … In that dream I walked all the way down the Manhattan Beach pier where we had our first date, our first kiss and where we have watched countless sunsets throughout various different seasons in our life together,” the singer wrote on Instagram. “As I got to the end of the pier you got down on one knee and asked me to be yours forever… Sebastian you made that dream come true. It was even more pure, more honest, more emotional, more beautiful than I could have ever imagined it to feel. Yes. A million times yes.” Three months later, Becky G’s dream is now uncertain.
The couple met when the singer was in Vancouver, Canada, filming the movie Power Rangers, with which she made her big-screen debut as Trini. Her castmate, the actress Naomi Scott, introduced her to Lletget. After several dates, the couple began a relationship, which despite the distance has remained solid. “6 years ago you asked me to by yours… Little did you know you already had my heart from the day we met,” she wrote on Instagram on June 4, their sixth anniversary.
