Two months have passed since Shakira shot down her former partner Gerard Piqué in the fiery track BZRP Music Session 53, recorded with Argentine producer Bizzarrap. In the song, the Colombian singer is openly critical of the former soccer player, accusing him of being the ‘worst version’ of himself when she needed him most.

Piqué has avoided talking about the track, which came months after the couple’s shock separation, but on Tuesday he shed some light about his feelings.

In an interview with radio program El món a Rac1, which is hosted by his friend Jordi Basté, Piqué subtly questioned Shakira’s actions, arguing that parents should protect their children. “People have a responsibility, especially those of us who are parents, to try to protect our children,” he said. “I don’t want to say anything more, we each make the decisions that we think are best.”

“I don’t want to talk about it anymore,” he continued. “I think that in the end the only thing that matters is that my children are fine,” he said, in reference to Milan and Sasha, who were born during Shakira and Piqué's nearly 12-year relationship.

When asked about why he brought his nine-year-old son Milan on a Twitch live for his virtual league Kings League without Shakira’s permission, he replied: “[Milan] was not scheduled to appear, but he asked to, and I was thrilled. I feel very proud about how he did it.”

On life after his retirement from soccer, Piqué said he was doing “very well” and described himself as “happy.” “A lot was happening in my life, not only at a professional level, and you realize that sometimes you have to make the best decision for those around you,” he said. “Leaving Barça was not something I wanted, but I understood that I had to do it.”

In the interview, Piqué also spoke about former FC Barça player Dani Alves, who has been in pre-trial detention since January 20 after being accused of raping a young woman in a Barcelona nightclub.

“It is a very complicated case. I have special appreciation for him because I know him personally,” he said. “The justice system has to do its job. I think we should wait [for that] because the easiest thing these days is to say that he is guilty. I prefer to wait and abide by what the judge says. As a former colleague you have the feeling that you know him, and then that you don’t, and you’re in shock. It’s a hell of a reality check. If it turned out to be true, I would be very harsh [on him].”

Before the interview, Piqué was seen leaving his Barcelona home left his home with his new girlfriend, Clara Chía, who was also attacked in Shakira’s breakup song.

In the interview, he did not confirm the recent rumors that a wedding may be on the horizon, nor did he comment on Shakira’s decision to perform the breakup song live on The Jimmy Fallon Show, while her children were in the audience. Since its release, Session 53 has set four Guinness World Records, including the most viewed Latin track on YouTube in 24 hours and the fastest Latin track to reach 100 million views on YouTube.
