Spain’s LaLiga denounces racist incident against Vinicius in Seville
The player appreciated the swift reaction from the Spanish club, which identified, threw out and reported the fan who made the monkey gesture, but he is disappointed that another incident happened to him
It all happened in the 85th minute of the clash between Seville and Madrid. Vinicius Jr., who had earlier had an altercation with the crowd at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium, got into a tangle with goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland while looking to grab the ball to take a quick corner kick. The Brazilian pushed the goalkeeper and his Seville teammates jumped in to defend him. A scuffle broke out right in front of the north stand of the ground. Objects were thrown onto the pitch at the hottest moment of an already tense match. While Ocampos and Vinicius were squaring up to each other, a fan made a racist gesture as the fracas ensued, which resulted in yellow cards for Vinicius and Ocampos from referee De Burgos Bengoechea.
Seville acted swiftly. The club identified and ejected the fan before the end of the match, and reported the incident to the corresponding authorities who were present at the stadium. LaLiga and its integrity department also recorded and identified the fan, who has been reported for his racist actions by the Spanish football competition itself. Immediately after the game, Seville issued a statement confirming the swift action and expulsion of the fan following his racist gesture. The Real Madrid and Brazil forward complimented Seville for acting so quickly, but expressed his regret in a post on Instagram on yet another Saturday night, when there had been another episode of ugly behavior in the stands.
Vinicius also said another video had been sent to him. “Congratulations to Seville for the swift action and sanction in yet another sad episode for Spanish football. Unfortunately, I have now access to a video of another racist at this Saturday’s match, this time made by a girl. It’s a shame that there’s no one to educate her. I invest a lot in education in Brazil to teach citizens with different attitudes,” he said.
“The racist’s face can be seen on the websites like so many other times. I hope the Spanish authorities do their part and change the legislation for once. These people also need to be criminally punished. It would be a great first step in preparing for the 2030 World Cup. I’m here to help,” added the Brazilian, who clarified that it was the 19th episode he had experienced in his career.
