Swiss tennis star Roger Federer, 41, on Thursday announced that he will retire from competitive tennis after next week’s Laver Cup in London.

“As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries,” Federer said in a post on Instagram. In a two-page letter dated September 15, the winner of 20 Grand Slam titles added: “I’ve worked hard to return to full competitive form. But I also know my body’s capacities and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear.”

Federer, who was ranked the world’s top player by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for 310 weeks, has not played a match since last year’s Wimbledon. He underwent another knee surgery and withdrew from the US Open later in the year.
