Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announce engagement

The singer and the football player have shared the news with their millions of followers on Instagram

This August has been a month full of big news for Taylor Swift and her millions of fans around the world. First, career-related headlines: on August 12, the artist revealed that she would be releasing her new album; shortly afterward, she made more headlines by sharing additional details about The Life of a Showgirl on the podcast run by her boyfriend, American football player Travis Kelce.

And this Tuesday, August 26, she shared a major personal announcement: the 35-year-old Pennsylvania singer revealed that she is marrying the athlete, who is also 35.

“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.” With this message, she announced her engagement to her 280 million followers on Instagram. The announcement was simultaneously posted on Kelce’s account, which has seven million followers on the same platform.

Accompanying the message was a carousel of photos: Travis Kelce kneeling in a flower-filled garden, the couple embracing, and, of course, a close-up of the singer’s ring. In just half an hour, the post — on Swift’s account, which has comments disabled — had already amassed over two million likes.

Their high-profile relationship was recently the focus of an interview with Travis Kelce published in GQ. The romance is key to understanding the present life of the Westlake athlete — and, by extension, his future. In the feature, he said that, as a professional athlete, and she, as a world-famous singer, they have a lot in common.

“I hadn’t experienced somebody in the same shoes as me, having a partner who understands the scrutiny, understands the ups and downs of being in front of millions,” he said. “That was very relatable, seeing how exhausted she would get after shows. She may not think of herself as an athlete. She will never tell anyone that she is an athlete. But I’ve seen what she goes through. I’ve seen the amount of work that she puts on her body, and it’s mind-blowing.”

Asked about a past interview, in which he mentioned that his ideal partner would share some qualities with his mother, Kelce went on to list what they have in common: “Their kindness, their genuineness, their ability to say hello to everyone in the room,” he said. “Their ability to show love and support no matter what. And on top of that, their work ethic. I saw my mother reach goals that she had set for herself, go from being a teller to working all the way up in the KeyBank building.”
