Orlando Bloom speaks for the first time about his split from Katy Perry: ‘We’re going to be great’
The actor and the singer, who have a five-year-old daughter, announced their separation in early July with a statement, but until now they had not made comments on the matter
It’s been two months since Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry confirmed what had been an open secret in Hollywood for months: that their relationship, after 10 years, was over. People magazine announced it at the end of June, but it wasn’t until July 4th that they confirmed it to the same publication in a brief statement. However, since then, both have maintained a discreet silence, which the actor has only now broken.
In an interview with the NBC morning show Today this Friday, the 48-year-old Lord of the Rings actor spoke about his separation from the 40-year-old singer, with whom he has a five-year-old daughter named Daisy. Although somewhat cryptic and shy, Bloom answered journalist Craig Melvin’s question about how he’s feeling.
Melvin told the actor—who appeared on the show to discuss his new film, The Cut—how his life has changed since his last appearance. “I’m great, man. I’m so grateful,” Bloom responded. “We have the most beautiful daughter.”
“You know when you leave everything on the field like I did in this movie? I feel grateful for all of it,” he said, referring to himself and Perry, though without naming her. “And we’re great. We’re going to be great. Nothing but love.”
Bloom and Perry decided to go their separate ways a few months ago, after nearly a decade together and always in the public eye, but also always trying to maintain their privacy. The announcement of their separation was also, in its own way, somewhat cryptic: “Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting,” explained a statement issued by their representatives, which added: “They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is — and always will be — raising their daughter with love, stability, and mutual respect.“
Sources close to the pair told various publications that they were still friends, although Perry was hurt by the split. But this summer they continued to demonstrate their connection, with photographs together with their child and with Bloom’s eldest son, Flynn, 14, whom he had with model Miranda Kerr, from whom he separated in 2013. Perry was married to British comedian Russell Brand for a few months in 2010. They had no children together.
Bloom and Perry never married. Their relationship began with a series of ups and downs, breaking up in March 2017, less than a year after they started dating. However, they soon reappeared together, tentatively at first, then gradually, with less secrecy. On February 14, 2019, coinciding with Valentine’s Day, they got engaged, although the wedding (as far as is known) never took place. In March 2020, they announced they were expecting their first child together, a daughter, Daisy Dove, who was born that summer.
Now, both are fully focused on their professional careers. Perry is embarking on a long tour that is taking her to concerts all over the world, and during which she has at times let the pain of her separation show almost tearfully in some songs. Meanwhile, Bloom is in the midst of promoting The Cut, in which he plays a boxer obsessively trying to overcome a defeat. For the role, which he has been preparing for some time, he has had to train hard and lose a lot of weight, which as he has mentioned in several interviews, was very difficult psychologically, as he was often so hungry that he could barely sleep.
