Crisis wipes 80,000 Spanish households off the map
Immigrants leaving the country and young people moving back home considered prime reasons
The crisis has caused a significant contraction in the total number of Spanish households, as many jobless people have either left the country or moved back in with their parents. The third quarter of 2013 ended with 48,900 fewer households than the previous quarter, down 80,000 compared with September 2012, according to the latest figures from the Active Population Survey (EPA).
"We all know people who went back to their parents' place because they lost their jobs and couldn't afford the rent, but there's also all those households that were never created by young people with no capacity to support themselves," explains Ángel Laborda of the savings banks foundation Funcas.
