EXPROPRIATION

Bolivia may not "give anything at all" to Madrid for REE stake

Announcement by vice president comes week after Bolivian government announces expropriation

Bolivia may give Spain "low compensation" or "maybe nothing at all" for last week's takeover of Red Eléctrica de España, Bolivian Vice President Álvaro García Linera said Monday.

"All nationalizations are always accompanied by low or tiny compensation, and, of course in our case, this will happen," García Linera said at a news conference in La Paz before meeting with REE president José Folgado. "Or perhaps the valuation will say that we don't have to pay anything at all."

On May 1, President Evo Morales announced that the government would expropriate the shares the Spanish utility holds in Bolivia's local power utility Transportadora de Electricidad (TDE).
