Police uncover new evidence in Gürtel case
Information about events, including wedding of ex-PM's daughter, recovered from warehouse in Alcorcón
Police have found new evidence in the Gürtel case — a widespread bribes-for-contracts scandal affecting the opposition Popular Party (PP) — at a warehouse in Alcorcón, near Madrid.
The corrupt Gürtel business ring used the space to store chairs and other material for events it organized for PP leaders, including Madrid premier Esperanza Aguirre and former Prime Minister José María Aznar.
Police found nine boxes on the premises containing information about hundreds of events, including some held at the Justice Ministry in 2001, when the PP was in power, and the wedding between Alejandro Agag and Ana Aznar, daughter of the former Spanish leader.
Police have set aside two boxes of "relevant evidence" for the case against the network coordinated by businessman Francisco Correa.
