‘You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo’: Renault makes the most of Shakira’s diss

The carmaker’s official Twitter account plays with the Colombian star’s new song, in which she disparages her ex Gerard Piqué and his new girlfriend Clara Chía

The main trends of the day on social media involve Shakira’s latest song, BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53. Topics such as ‘RIP Piqué,’ ‘Casio’ or ‘Shakira and Bizarrap’ attracted the interest of millions of people around the world. The tune had accumulated over 42.8 million streams on Spotify on Monday.

The song’s mention of a Renault Twingo triggered all kinds of reactions, some by the official account of the brand in Spain. The commotion has put the spotlight on the popular French utility vehicle which, regardless of the singer’s opinion (“you traded a Ferrari for a Twingo”), has a legion of fans in all the countries where it has been marketed since 1992.

The post included the message “Pa tipos y tipas como tú. ¡Sube el volumen!” (For guys and gals like you, pump up the volume!), a clear reference to a line from Shakira’s song, “A she-wolf like me is not for guys like you.” The manufacturer used hashtags like #clearly #young #agile #compact and #mischievous

Even the electric Twingo featured in the tweet sports a number 22, another reference to Shakira’s song, which says “I am worth two 22-year-olds,” the age of her ex Gerard Piqué's new partner, Clara Chía.

Some of the comments showed humorous support for the small vehicle. “Up with Twingo! You may not be better than a Ferrari but you’re worth more than Piqué!” Others rolled in Shakira’s apparent disdain for Casio watches (“You traded a Rolex for a Casio”) and suggested that people consider “gifting a Casio together with the Twingo.”
