During the last few years, the Golden Globes faced criticism for the lack of ethnic diversity among the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the group that founded and produced the awards ceremony. In 2021, a boycott led by media companies, actors and other creatives, caused the ceremony to be held privately and without a television broadcast. Although the 2022 ceremony seemed a return to normalcy, the HFPA eventually disbanded, and was purchased by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Industries, in turn owned by the billionaire Todd Boehly, who now are the organizers of the event.

This change in leadership is also leading to some changes during the ceremony, including the addition of two new categories, and a change in the list of nominees. Here’s all you need to know about the event:

Golden Globes 2024 changes

The 81st Golden Globe Awards are the first to be produced by Dick Clark Productions after the company acquired the assets of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, including the awards ceremony. It will also be the first to air live on CBS in the United States since 1982.

The ceremony has two new categories: “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement”, which will award the best film that grossed at least $100 million domestically and $150 million worldwide, and “Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television”. However, this year, the Cecil B. DeMille Award and the Carol Burnett Award will not be presented, but they’re expected to return in the future, according to Executive Vice President Tim Gray, who also announced that the categories would only have 5 nominees instead of 6.
