From Zendaya to Kendall Jenner: How celebrities are using nipple pasties to defy censorship

In response to social media’s sweeping bans, actors and designers are turning to these dynamic covers that have been making waves for decades

To celebrate her 27th birthday on social media, Zendaya shared a photo of herself wearing an outfit from American brand Collina Strada. It's a design from the brand's fall-winter 2020 collection, consisting of a puffy skirt and cape. As for the top, it's a 'nipplekini' that gets around Instagram's censorship rule.
Zendaya is not the only one to have caused a stir online by wearing a 'nipplekini.' A year ago, Jennifer Aniston posed for the cover of Allure magazine in this skimpy Chanel design, a vintage piece from 1996.
Created in the 1920s by burlesque dancers, nipple covers or pasties have a long history of causing scandal. One of the first celebrities who dared to wear them on the red carpet was rapper Lil' Kim. That appearance, at the 1999 VMA's, became one of the most controversial looks in the history of the red carpet.
Just a few weeks ago, model Kendall Jenner also wanted to join the trend, sharing a photo of herself in this David Koma dress on Instagram. In this case, the flower covers are not made from fabric, but printed in 3D plastic.
At the last Grammy Awards ceremony, singer Camila Cabello chose a PatBo design, topped with a pearl bra with two flowers as nipple covers.
Model Bella Hadid stole the show two years ago at the Cannes Film Festival in a low-cut black dress and huge gold Schiaparelli necklace.
Puerto Rican model Joan Smalls attended the after party of the 2020 Oscars in a blue dress with two sparkly nipple covers, a design by Schiaparelli.
The catwalk has played an important role in normalizing nipple pasties. In his spring-summer 1986 collection, Thierry Mugler challenged the prudish critics with this design worn by Iman.
Tom Ford included several designs with nipple covers in his London show for the spring-summer 2015 season. A few weeks later, Rihanna wore one of his dresses to a charity gala in Los Angeles.
This dress, worn by model Binx Walton, is a design by Anthony Vaccarello. It was included in his first show at the helm of Saint Laurent in 2017.

Singer Doja Cat picked up four golden microphones at the Billboard Music Awards in this Schiaparelli dress, with metallic nipple covers by Agent Provocateur. It was a statement of intent, like each of her style choices.
In this image, Victoria de Angelis, from the Italian band Måneskin group, is seen wearing a Gucci jumpsuit. "I think it's very important to send messages of freedom," she said at the time, as she walked down the red carpet.
At last year's Met Gala, Cara Delevingne wore a Dior gown and painted her torso gold. Her inspiration? Charlize Theron in the now iconic J'Adore ad.
