Kaia Gerber on being a nepo baby: ‘I won’t deny the privilege that I have’
In an interview with ‘Elle,’ the model talks about how being Cindy Crawford’s daughter has helped her in the fashion world
American model Kaia Gerber, 21, has spoken to Elle magazine about one of the most-taking about issues in the entertainment world: nepotism. Gerber is the daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber. And like her mother, she is a very successful model, appearing on the front cover of magazines, walking the catwalk for the best designers in the world and modeling in advertising campaigns for brands such as Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs, Celine and Omega.
“I won’t deny the privilege that I have,” Gerber told Elle. “Even if it’s just the fact that I have a really great source of information and someone to give me great advice, that alone I feel very fortunate for. My mom always joked, ‘If I could call and book a Chanel campaign, it would be for me and not you.’ But I also have met amazing people through my mom whom I now get to work with.”
Although Gerber readily admits that having one of the fashion industry’s most influential figures as a mother has helped her modelling career, she says it’s different when it comes to acting.
“With acting, it’s so different. No artist is going to sacrifice their vision for someone’s kid. That just isn’t how art is made, and what I’m interested in is art,” said Gerber. “Also, no one wants to work with someone who’s annoying, and not easy to work with, and not kind. Yes, nepotism is prevalent, but I think if it actually was what people make it out to be, we’d see even more of it.”
Gerber, who has a few supporting TV and movie roles to her name, is set to appear in the new series Mrs. American Pie, where she will star alongside Laura Dern and Kristen Wiig.
