Katie Holmes goes viral after wearing jeans and sneakers to Christmas ball
Known for her casual and minimalist style, the actress is now bringing back Y2K fashion. But not everyone is pleased
Three years ago, actress Katie Holmes became an unexpected style icon when she was photographed in New York, days after her breakup with actor Jamie Foxx, wearing jeans and a cashmere sweater and bra. The look, designed by New York label Khaite, made headlines across the world, and triggered hundreds of low-cost spinoffs.
Since then, Holmes has become a muse for brands such as Khaité, Ulla Johnson and Chloé. Her minimalist and natural style, inspired by basic and comfortable garments, is widely celebrated, and imitated.
And it was this same style that saw Holmes go viral again on the weekend. The furor was caused when the actress appeared on the red carpet of Friday’s iHeart Radio Jingle Ball concert wearing a mini-dress over straight jeans and a pair of black sneakers. She wore no jewelry and left her hair out.
While some on social media criticized the Dawson’s Creek star for being too casual, others praised her for opting for a comfortable outfit. Social media users were also quick to point out that the look was reminiscent of 2000 trends or Y2K fashion, when it was common to wear a dress over jeans. While this combination is not often seen on the street, several designers such as Jacquemus, Luis Vuitton and Proenza Schouler have included the look in recent collections.
Holmes’ red carpet appearance is also a reminder that there was a time not too long ago when celebrities did not need elaborate outfits or hairstyles to attend an event. Twenty years ago, celebrities, especially young stars, wore jeans, ballet flats and dresses – clothes they would wear to any other formal occasion. There was no media battle to be the best dressed, or even to be the most extravagant. If there was any intention at all, it was perhaps just to wear outfits that could be imitated by their fans.
The question now is whether Holmes’ decision to wear jeans and sneakers to a Christmas ball will pave the way for a new generation of celebrities, who are willing to break with tradition.
