Beyoncé leads nominations for the 2023 Grammy Awards
The former Destiny’s Child singer has nine nods, while Kendrick Lamar has been nominated in eight categories for his first album in five years
The Recording Academy announced on Tuesday the nominees for the 2023 Grammy Awards, which will take place on February 5 at the Crypto Arena in Los Angeles. Leading the race is pop star Beyoncé, who has been nominated for nine prizes, including Album of the Year for Renaissance. If she wins three more Grammys, she will become the most awarded artist in the history of the Grammys, a title currently held by orchestra conductor Georg Solti.
Over her career, Beyoncé has been nominated for 88 Grammy Awards, which has made her and her husband, Jay-Z, the most nominated artists in Grammy history. But the former Destiny’s Child member has never won Album of the Year, something which could change at next year’s ceremony.
Other nominees at the 65th Grammy Awards include artists such as Adele, Harry Styles and Kendrick Lamar, who all released critically acclaimed albums in 2022. Rapper Kendrick Lamar has been nominated for eight prizes, including Album of the Year for Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, his first studio album in five years. The 30-year-old, who has won 14 Grammys Awards since 2013, is hoping to close the gap with Jay-Z and Kanye West, who have 24 and 21 Grammys respectively. Kanye West, who is embroiled in a scandal over anti-Semitic comments, has not been nominated for any awards for his 2022 album Donda 2.
The Grammy nominees also include music veterans such as Mary J. Blige, who is back on the scene after nine years, with six nominations, and ABBA. Despite being a global pop phenomenon, up until 2022, the Swedish band had only been nominated for one Grammy. For the 65th edition of the awards, the group has four nominations, including Best Album of the Year for Voyage.
British singer Adele, who has 15 Grammys to her name, is also back in the running with 30, her first album in six years. If she wins the coveted Album of the Year award, she will become the first woman to win the prize three times, surpassing Taylor Swift, who has won the gong twice.
Reggaeton idol Bad Bunny has also made history. On Tuesday, he became the first Latino artist to be nominated for Album of the Year for an all-Spanish record, Un Verano Sin Ti. Among the nominees for Best New Artist are Brazilian singer Anitta and Omar Apollo, who sings in English and Spanish.
The 65th Grammy Awards will pay tribute to Berry Gordy, the pioneer of the Motown label, and Smokey Robinson, one of the members of Los Milagros, one of the bands on the Motown label that changed the sound of Detroit forever.
