Starting at 6am on Saturday, adults in Spain will be allowed to go out for walks and to take exercise. Under the new rules, announced by Health Minister Salvador Illa on Thursday, adults may take a stroll either alone or with one other member of their household, as long as they remain within a one-kilometer radius of their home.

Adults may also go out for individual exercise – such as running or cycling – once a day, without making contact with third parties. In the case of these exercises, there is no limit on how far citizens can go, as long as they remain within the same municipality. All kinds of sports are allowed as long as they are practiced individually.

Both walks and exercise must take place between 6am and 10am, or between 8pm and 11pm.

According to the ministerial order, published on Friday in the Official State Gazette (BOE), adults cannot drive a motorized vehicle or use public transport to travel to a spot to practice exercise or go for a walk.

This is the latest move in the ongoing relaxation of Spain’s coronavirus confinement measures, which have been in place since March 14, and are among the strictest in the world. Since Sunday, April 26, children under the age of 14 have been allowed to go out for supervised walks within a one-kilometer radius of their homes.

In a bid to minimize crowds and protect at-risk groups, such as seniors, the government has set time slots for outdoor activity. Adults are allowed to go outside between 6am and 10am, or between 8pm and 11pm; children between 12pm and 7pm; and people who need to go out with a caregiver and seniors over 70 years of age have their own time slots of 10am to 12pm and 7pm to 8pm.
