Spanish Moto2 rider Luis Salom has died today as the result of injuries sustained during an accident he suffered during free practice at the Montmeló circuit in Barcelona.

Salom, from the SAG Racing Team, was taken by ambulance at 4pm to the Hospital Universitari General de Catalunya. The 24-year-old suffered a heavy crash during the second free-practice session ahead of Sunday’s Catalan Grand Prix. He fell before taking turn 12, after running just five laps. His time was around 1.5 seconds off the fastest rider in the session.

Eyewitnesses reported that the rider was struck by his motorbike as he lost control coming out of turn 11, which in Moto2 is taken at over 160km/h.

For Salom, who came second in the Moto3 championship in 2012, this was his third season in Moto2. The fall prompted race organizers to immediately show the red flag to stop the session, before it was definitively canceled.
