Sacyr won’t halt work on Panama project

Spanish constructor had threatened to stop construction on Monday due to cost overruns Mediation of European Commission may see negotiation period extended

The consortium headed by Spanish builder Sacyr that is in charge of a project to widen the Panama Canal denied it was going to call a halt to work on Monday, the date it had previously warned the Panamanian authorities it would do so after a disagreement regarding cost overruns.

The companies involved in the project have called on the European Commission to mediate in the disagreement, meaning that the negotiation period could be extended.

The Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC) consortium threatened to suspend work on the project at the start of the year due to the overruns, which the consortium estimates at 1.2 billion euros.

GUPC also includes Italy’s Impregilo, the Belgian firm Jan De Nul and the Panamanian company CUSA.
