Robert Downey, Jr meets The Mandarin in Iron Man 3 Javier Cámara and Candela Peña reunite in Isabel Coixet’s intense new drama

“I’m Tony Stark. I build neat stuff, I’ve got a great girl and occasionally I save the world. So why can’t I sleep?” Picking up where last year’s all-star Marvel jamboree The Avengers left off, Iron Man 3 finds Robert Downey, Jr’s superhero-slash-billionaire industrialist at a low ebb, scarred by his recent brush with death and confined to quarters with just live-in lover Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and his arsenal of self-built armor for company. But bursting on to the global stage to yank him out of his torpor is new supervillain The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), an intriguing mishmash of Orientalist stereotypes who speaks in a sonorous American burr, like a slowed-down wrestling announcer. Don Cheadle returns as Stark’s best bud James Rhodes, while Shane Black, who previously directed Downey, Jr in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), takes over from Jon Favreau behind the camera.

Isabel Coixet’s intense new drama Ayer no termina nunca reunites Javier Cámara and Candela Peña, who starred together in Pablo Berger’s 2003 sex comedy Torremolinos 73. Here they play a former couple who reunite in a Barcelona cemetery after five years apart. Both have experienced significant personal trauma in the intervening years and the reencounter serves as an opportunity to pick over their past, reopening old wounds that had never quite closed.

Based on a script by Rodrigo Cortés (Buried), Apartment 143 is an English-language Spanish horror about a team of parapsychologists called in to investigate a family’s haunted house. The director is Spanish debutant Carles Torrens.
