Fire in Doha mall kills 19, including four Spanish children

Blaze affecting play center proved hard for Qatari firefighters to access

A fire in a commercial center in Doha has left 19 people dead, including 13 children. Four of the children were Spanish, three from the same family.

The Spanish Foreign Ministry on Monday confirmed the deaths of the four Spaniards, while the Qatari Interior Ministry said apart from the 13 children, four teachers and two firemen had also perished. A further 17 people were injured.

The fire broke out in the morning, and firefighters took more than two hours to bring it under control. The children were in a play center on the first floor of the mall, which was difficult to access. As a result, the firemen had to tackle the fire from the roof.

The Villagio mall center in the Qatari capital where the fire took place opened in 2006. It has a hotel, a theme park and an ice-skate rink.
