The interview, conducted in mid-January, is focused on her new series, Ponies (SkyShowtime), but she accepts the questions about her most famous role with a smile, and a touch of resignation. Does she think she’ll ever be able to shake off the weight of having been the Mother of Dragons? “Oh, she’s not a burden, but I don’t think I ever will. And I don’t think that’s the worst thing in the world. I had a beautiful experience, an insane opportunity. I feel incredibly grateful for that. It was able to attract different generations and, thus, a massive audience: it is still the most-watched English-language series in Netflix history. It had an imagery behind it that appealed to adult generations, those who remembered The Addams Family from the 1990s — starring Anjelica Huston as Morticia and Christina Ricci as Wednesday — and those who grew up with Tim Burton’s filmography. The newer version stars Jenna Ortega, who stood out as a child actress and Disney character and was already excelling in more adult productions. It also has a powerful visual identity, allowing anyone to recognize what story it’s from at a glance. And it had something no one could have expected: massive virality. The “Wednesday dance,” which became a viral challenge on social media, prompted many young people who hadn’t yet seen the series to check it out to learn its origins.

Seguir leyendo

Jenna Ortega in episode three of the second season of 'Wednesday.'

Apple TV+, caught between the prestige of its shows and multi-million losses

Natalia Marcos

The platform broadcasts the favorites to win the Emmy for best drama (‘Severance’) and comedy (‘The Studio’), but is losing over $1 billion a year

When the Television Academy announced the nominations for its awards on July 15, which will be presented on September 14, one platform stood out above the rest: Apple TV+. That may be true even if you don’t have kids. Such angst would be attributed to Bluey, a record-breaking phenomenon. According to Bloomberg, the show was responsible for 29% of all views (besides those of movies) on Disney+ during the fourth quarter of 2023. Last year, it was the second most-watched series across all U.S. streaming platforms. It’s estimated that the franchise, which includes video games, apps, books, music albums, immersive experiences, theater productions (like that which will soon tour 11 Spanish cities) and all kinds of merchandise, is valued at $2 billion. This Sunday marks the debut of its 28-minute special (a departure from its standard eight-minute episodes), The Sign, with which the series will attempt another of its trademark plot twists that have made followers of both kids and adults. The special’s plot promises a wedding and a possible move — hence the angst.

Seguir leyendo

An image from ‘The Sign’, the final episode of the third season of ‘Bluey’.

Streaming platforms navigate user disloyalty

Natalia Marcos

Too much content, high prices and time constraints drive an endless cycle of customer subscriptions and quick cancellations

María Bielsa is 57 years old and watches a lot of TV series, but never on broadcast or cable television. Increasingly expanded streaming platforms face greater and fiercer competition and are looking for stories that both appeal to a global audience and are especially successful in their local markets. They know that something very local can be a tremendous global hit, as was the case with shows such as Spain’s Money Heist and South Korea’s Squid Game. For that reason, in 2024, platforms like Netflix are investing in non-English content with an eye toward the Latin American and Spanish-speaking markets. The day before filming began, director James Burrows took the six actors on a private plane to dinner in Las Vegas and told them, “Look around you. Nobody knows you. You can never do this again. Your life is going to change.” And that’s exactly what happened. Perry — who died on Saturday at the age of 54 — was cast as Chandler Bing, and from that moment on, he would forever be linked with the character. With his particular way of delivering lines and animated facial expressions, he imbued Chandler with a charisma that lasted throughout the show’s 10 seasons. Some of Chandler’s best-known lines captured his personality, such as “I’m not great at advice. But can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?” and “I’m Chandler, I make jokes when I’m uncomfortable.”

Seguir leyendo

Matthew Perry, in one of the first seasons of 'Friends.'

Contests, adventures, dating and true crime: Popular TV around the world

Natalia Marcos

The MIPCOM television content market highlights international trends on the small screen

Every October, MIPCOM, the world’s largest international television content market, is held in Cannes. Jesse Armstrong watched its last episode surrounded by other screenwriters at London’s British Film Institute: “It was very sad and very happy and fun to do that,” he says. He had known for a long time how the story would end. The creator, with a long history in comedy and satire – a genre that he perfected in the HBO series – said goodbye to a show that critics placed high on a pedestal. Actress Pamela Anderson and rock star Tommy Lee met on New Year’s Eve, 1994, and Lee became obsessed with Anderson, a global superstar and sex symbol due to her role on the hit television show Baywatch. Lee followed her, without her permission, on a trip to Cancun and three days later they were married. But a leaked sex tape turned everything upside down. The love story between Anderson and Lee was big business. The tabloids fed on their ups and downs but it turned out that all that glittered was not gold; far from it in fact. The Disney+ show Pam & Tommy, the first three episodes of which aired this week, focuses its attention on the circumstances under which the most famous sex tape of the 1990s was recorded and leaked, and the consequences it had on everyone involved in the case.

Seguir leyendo

The Spanish fans giving the ‘Game of Thrones’ game away

Natalia Marcos

HBO moves several scenes to Northern Ireland after photos of shoot in Spain distributed online

The seventh season of the series, which follows the fortunes of the Starks, Lannisters and Targaryen in one of the most expensive television productions ever made, will unfold in a number of Spanish locations, including Seville, nearby Santiponce, Cáceres, and Almodóvar del Río in Cordoba, as well as the Basque Country.

Seguir leyendo

Kit Harrington and Liam Cunningham do their thing on location in the Basque Country.

Netflix bursts onto the Spanish film scene with a homegrown production

Natalia Marcos, Rosario G.
