The Islamic Republic shot down a U.S. F-15 fighter jet with two crew members on board over its territory on Friday. One of the crew members was rescued a few hours later by U.S. helicopters, according to media in Washington and Israel. The whereabouts of the second crew member are still unknown. This is the first time Iran has shot down a U.S. military aircraft over its airspace in nearly five weeks of the conflict. This is an unprecedented episode in the history of the Middle East, both because it is a joint operation from the outset and because, this time, its stated objective is to overthrow the Ayatollah’s regime: the first bombings, early on Saturday, targeted some 30 regime leaders and military chiefs, according to Israeli media. The most important of these was the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, whose death was announced by US President Donald Trump in the afternoon. Tehran has neertheless denied this through its official news agency. Netanyahu has said that the operation will last “as long as it takes.” The death toll in Iran exceeds 200, including dozens of girls who were attending classes at a primary school, according to the Red Crescent.

Seguir leyendo

Smoke rises following an explosion, after Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israel had launched a pre-emptive attack against Iran, in Tehran.

Trump urges Iranians to rise up: ‘Now is the time to seize control of your destiny’

Macarena Vidal Liy

The US president confirmed the start of ‘major combat operations’ and said that he will not tolerate a nuclear-armed Iran

U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday directly called on the Iranian people to overthrow their government once the strikes carried out by U.S. and Israeli troops against Iran have concluded. Two centuries after its proclamation, the 19th-century Monroe Doctrine — which ushered in an era of Washington interventionism in Latin America directed mostly against leftist governments and sympathizers — is returning, now with Trump-era characteristics.
