A house and drugs. Mountains of narcotics, confirms the lead guitarist for The Band. New York, New York (1977) had been a failure, and the filmmaker had lost his way in life. Until his body said enough, and, suffering from internal bleeding, he ended up hospitalized. “Most of me wanted to die. Because at that point, I couldn’t do my job anymore. I felt incapable of creating,” the director confesses to Rebecca Miller on camera. Zanes is the author of Deliver Me From Nowhere, a book that recounts the months in which the rocker, after the smash hit success of The River (1980), struggled to avoid being devoured by depression and to maintain his creative purity despite pressure from his record label, a battle (a purely artistic one) that he would win with the release of Nebraska (1982). But not just in any old way. She would do it alongside the prestigious British dancer and choreographer Akram Khan. And not even with an existing piece, but together, over nearly six months of rehearsals, they would research, create, and assemble a work that would combine the best of both worlds, capitalizing on their apparent weaknesses and contradictions. Binoche ended up dancing and Khan acting, and in the work In-I, the fears of a man who had suffered racism and discrimination due to his skin color and his Muslim faith would merge with those of a woman harassed in a world — that of cinema — with a tyrannical stance over bodies and hierarchies. He was tenacious, intelligent, a charmer and an icon of the 20th century. He triumphed in the cinema and in motor racing, the passion that truly filled his life. From the epicenter of the Kodak Theater stage on March 27, 2022, that ripple has continued to vibrate, overshadowing the career of Will Smith, once Hollywood’s Mr. Nice and beloved by the public, who in 30 seconds destroyed his artistic future by getting up from his seat at the Oscar ceremony and slapping the comedian Chris Rock, who had just made a joke about the alopecia suffered by his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Neither the statuette he won minutes later, for King Richard, nor the messages of repentance he issued later, have served to make the cinemagoing audience forget. On June 7, Smith’s first big release after the incident will be in theaters, and the actor has chosen to play it safe by enlisting his friend Martin Lawrence and returning to his most popular franchise, Bad Boys, with a fourth installment, Bad Boys: Ride or Die. It was the team’s first Super Bowl win in 50 years. “When I visit my parents and have some downtime, I always head to the stadium with all my fan gear,” he laughs. “That was the season we finally made it to the final. Back when the team was just average, my son became a big fan and I wondered why I had subjected him to that. But then everything turned around, and we made it to the Super Bowl. He begged me to go. That picture captures the exact moment we realized victory was just seconds away, and my boy just went absolutely wild!” The photo shows a warm father-son moment, the perfect portrait of Paul Rudd. The comedy star has been married for 30 years without any scandals; he’s an actor who has made it to the top playing good guys. Now he’s in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, playing a high school science teacher who ends up chasing ectoplasms for love.

Seguir leyendo

Paul Rudd at a screening of 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' in Madrid; March 18, 2024.

Jonathan Glazer, the Jewish director of ‘The Zone of Interest’ who dared to call out Israel at the Oscars

Gregorio Belinchón Yagüe

Jewish groups in the U.S. and Israeli officials criticize the British filmmaker’s strong statement

“All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present, not to say, ‘Look what they did then.’ Rather, ‘what we do now.’ Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst.” That’s how Jonathan Glazer started his speech after winning the Oscar for Best International Feature Film for The Zone of Interest, a drama set in the Auschwitz extermination camp during World War II. “Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people,” Glazer continued. “Whether the victims of October 7 in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all the victims of this dehumanization — how do we resist?” One of the prominent music video directors of the 1990s and director of four cult films, Glazer skillfully depicted the horror of Nazi extermination camps without showing any victims. But not with any egomaniacal fuss or egocentricity, but rather, pure didactic eagerness, and love for a good chat. Haynes (Los Angeles, 63 years old) tends to bring several books related to his film to interviews. For ours, the Californian director showed up with photo books that explore the landscapes of Georgia, where the plot of May December takes place. But none of them made reference to the plot’s real elephant in the room, the fact that the film centers on a real-life event in the United States that met with a media storm. The case involved a teacher and one of her underage students. Sex, jail, childbirth and death was to follow. “All my countrymen remember it,” he explains with a rogue smile.

Seguir leyendo

Director Todd Haynes poses for EL PAÍS in Gucci.

Lily Gladstone, Oscar nominee for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’: ‘The world has to start getting worried about the return of Trump’

Gregorio Belinchón Yagüe

The Piegan Blackfeet and Nez Perce actress feels the weight of ‘being an ambassador for a great community,’ and fights to communicate to fans that the film’s true protagonists are the Osage

When Lily Gladstone (Kalispell, Montana, 37 years old) was a little girl, her father made her believe he had powers. “He used to play jokes on me. Nowadays, he takes care of my dog when I travel. And since we share location by cell phone, when I’m 400 meters from our house, he’ll open the window and shout my name, as if he were summoning me. Of course, my dog is convinced that I show up at the door because he called me,” laughs the actress. “But he is also the father who gave me the courage to go out into life, and a deep respect for my roots [which come from the Blackfeet and Nez Perce peoples]. He gave me the name of his grandmother, Lily. I even got to know her younger brother, my great-grand uncle. My father insisted that I not lose connection with either family, or my community. Many people witnessed the Holocaust and chose to ignore or deny it. The Nazi extermination camps posed a logistical challenge that required infrastructure and a bureaucracy to undertake. They required people to perform their gruesome tasks and then go back home to their loved ones at night. How did they become capable of committing these crimes? Books and movies often focus on victims, but others explore the executioners’ daily lives. Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest depicts the horrors of Auschwitz through the perspective of the commander’s family, whose mansion was located next to the camp wall. While they couldn’t see into the camp, they were exposed every day to its sounds and smells. Glazer, who won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes for his film, adapted Martin Amis’ novel of the same name. Other productions in the same vein include the TV miniseries The Interpreter of Silence (Disney+), based on Annette Hess’ novel The German House. There is, and playwright Celine Song discovered it one evening sitting in the middle of a triangle completed by her husband, writer Justin Kuritzkes, in a T-shirt, and a Korean engineer, in smart casual attire. They were drinking at the bar of Please Don’t Tell, a New York speakeasy. “I noticed the other customers in front of me, and thought about what questions they would be asking. Like, who was the husband? Was the other guy a lover? Really, what each of us meant to the other two. Suddenly, I felt that answering that question alone was an easy way out, it didn’t show all the intricacies of the truth, and therein lay the germ of a story. I was telling different friends that anecdote, and depending on their background and culture, each one had very different approaches to that moment,” she says with a chuckle. “In addition, through that woman, who was already fictionalized, I could dive into the nostalgia of a future and a relationship that could have happened but didn’t.”

Seguir leyendo

Teo Yoo and Greta Lee in 'Past Lives.'

Maïwenn: ‘Problems with Johnny Depp? They didn’t start dating until she was 15 and, as she has said on other occasions, at the time she was coming out of a painful relationship with her divorced parents, who had each, in their own way, abused her psychologically. By the time she was 16, she was already a mother and was living with Besson in Los Angeles; she had abandoned her budding acting career. Despite these facts, Maïwenn Aurélia Nedjma Le Besco, her full name, has always asserted that she has been in control of her life, that she has done what she wanted as much as possible. “The Professional [directed by Besson in 1994] was partly based on the relationship between Luc and me,” she has recounted, meaning that she didn’t feel like much of a child at the time. After her divorce, she returned to France, performed humorous one-woman shows, returned to cinema as an actress and began a career as a director. That last pursuit brought her to the most recent Cannes Film Festival, where she recently premiered her sixth feature film as a director, Jeanne du Barry, in which she also co-stars with Johnny Depp.

Seguir leyendo

Johnny Depp and Maïwenn, in 'Jeanne du Barry'.

Pain, shame and silence: Four films about sexual abuse

Gregorio Belinchón Yagüe

The San Sebastián Festival in Spain addresses rape’s painful imprint on families and society

François is a prestigious, wealthy lawyer, with a pristine image as a defender of children. But behind closed doors, he hides a monster who has spent 30 years convincing his wife that he is controlling his impulses. Three decades ago, he raped a boy over a year and a half. Every night he stays in his luxurious house to watch child pornography, justifying himself with the cases he investigates. Joachim Lafosse, a little-known Belgian filmmaker, thus starts A Silence, a film now competing at the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain. The silence in the title is not that of the lawyer, but that of his wife — a victim or an accomplice? — who does not realize what her young son is learning from his father. A similar reflection on brutal legacies appears in Kalak, by the Swede Isabella Eklöf, also in the San Sebastián contest, as well as The Successor, by the Frenchman Xavier Legrand, on the remains of the shipwreck left by a similar predator. The festival is also screening Quitter la nuit, by the Canadian Delphine Girard, who illustrates how an incident of sexual abuse committed in a car is seen differently by the victim and by the perpetrator. Together, the four films evoke a pessimistic feeling about the advance of darkness in today’s society.

Seguir leyendo

Emmanuelle Devos in ‘A Silence.’

Interview with a terrorist: Documentary on former ETA chief creates a stir at San Sebastián Film Festival

Gregorio Belinchón Yagüe

'We believe in our work and we stand by it. He has just written a novel, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, which comes after a previous collection of short stories, Uncommon Type: Some Stories (2017). And what is the two-time Oscar winner going to talk about? Well, Hollywood, film shoots and the murky times the film industry is experiencing. And about the America in which Hanks seems to feel increasingly alone every day and, as such, becomes an aspiration that is far from reality: a multiethnic America that repays hard work and talent with promotions and decent salaries. The best that can be said about Hanks’s novel is that it oozes Hanks from every angle and that it is fluidly written. But that also weighs the book down: Hanks has not written a satire but believes in his work and, like a prestigious director, has retained control over the final editing.

Seguir leyendo

Tom Hanks, pictured in December 2022 at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm, Sweden.

Drought, sweat and hellish heat: 20 great movies with searing temperatures

Gregorio Belinchón Yagüe

As the thermometer continues to soar, here is a review of the best films about dirt-dry conditions and sweltering heat waves, from ‘Mad Max’ to ‘Do the Right Thing’

As the summer heat intensifies, we look at 20 famous movies, where drought, sweat and sweltering conditions play leading roles.

Seguir leyendo

Javier Bardem (l) and Timothée Chalamet (r) in a scene from 'Dune'.

The 13 action sequences in which Tom Cruise risked his life

Gregorio Belinchón Yagüe

The actor, famous for performing his own stunts, once again defies death to please his fans in ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’

Director Christopher McQuarrie makes it clear – Tom Cruise does risk his life to film his action sequences. The actor has stand-ins and specialists who replace him occasionally, but when it is time for the action set pieces, whether it is a jump, a fight, a chase or a shootout, he asks to do it himself. And although there are mandatory safety measures, there is always the risk of something going wrong. Want an example? We have 13. At one of the factories belonging to Frito-Lay, a subsidiary of PepsiCo that produces all kinds of potato chips and snacks, the fear of layoffs as a result of a market in crisis seized its workers. Yet one janitor, Richard Montañez, born on the outskirts of Los Angeles to a Mexican family, insisted that the Latino community did not eat Cheetos — the company’s flagship product — and that potential customers did not have a flavor that matched their tastes in the stores. Inspired by a video featuring Frito-Lay CEO Roger Enrico, Montañez created a spicy recipe at home that, when mixed with Cheetos, became an explosive, yet tasty snack: Flamin’ Hot Cheetos were born. He immediately contacted Enrico directly to share the idea with him and get his approval. When he got the green light, he went one step further. In the face of the marketing department’s incompetence, Montañez, along with friends and family, multiplied sales efforts to create demand for those Cheetos designed for hardened appetites. His venture succeeded, and he was immediately promoted to director of multicultural community marketing, leaping from janitor-cleaning boy to the office. This is a story of achievement, a magnificent triumph of the American dream, with only one catch: it’s a lie. The section that suffers the most wear and tear, taking a particular battering from stiletto heels, is the ‘rosso’-red central area (the sides are in another shade, known as ‘teatro’ red). This main section is replaced every day and re-used locally. Two or three times a day, come rain or shine, the covered entranceway leading up to the Palais des Festivals, where spotlights ensure the stars are perfectly lit as they are photographed, hosts a red-carpet walk: an event that’s a blend of performance, posturing and modelling, with big investment by major fashion and jewelry firms. The scandal broke out when Letourneau became pregnant, and it was discovered that the two were in a sexual relationship. Letourneau’s husband divorced her and took their four children to Alaska. This triggered a chain of events: Vili Fualaau’s parents sued her and a trial was held. The sentence was light — only three months in prison — but it would be harsher if Letourneau saw her student again. After giving birth to a girl, she finished serving her sentence and was let out of jail. But one early morning in February 1998, police discovered her with the student in a car. A month later, she announced that she was pregnant again. She was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison, and had her second daughter with Fualaau behind bars. She did not leave prison until 2004.

Seguir leyendo

Pedro Almodóvar will shoot his first English-language feature film in New York City

Gregorio Belinchón Yagüe

The legendary Spanish filmmaker has just screened his medium-length movie ‘Strange Way of Life’ at the Cannes Film Festival. The 77-year-old, Düsseldorf-born director did just that at the end of the 1970s, after he had already made a name for himself as an auteur of interest in European cinema. However, dreams come true in some very strange ways: Wenders accepted Francis Ford Coppola’s proposal to direct Hammett, a screenplay in which the mystery writer Dashiell Hammett himself became the star of a noir thriller. Warner Brothers ultimately destroyed that movie in 1982, to the dismay of Coppola and Wenders--”I dedicated years of my life, I moved there just for a hellish outcome,” Wenders said. But the film was essential for the German director’s decision that he would only direct again if he had absolute freedom and without a previously closed script. Thus, in the spring of 1983, he set out to shoot a film in southwest Texas that a year later won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and struck a chord with audiences around the world. Forty years ago this spring, Wenders began filming Paris, Texas.

Seguir leyendo

‘The name’s Bond... The book — which was written in 2010 and revised in 2021 — focuses on the movie’s creation of a female archetype that transcended Hepburn herself and has little to do with the Holly Golightly described by Truman Capote in his original novel. The film made Hepburn herself a huge star, and audiences viewing “Audrey’s Holly Golightly in 1961 experienced, for the very first time, a glamorous fantasy life of wild, kooky independence and sophisticated sexual freedom; best of all, it was a fantasy they could make real,” argues Wasson.

Seguir leyendo

The strange tale of ‘Cocaine Bear’

Gregorio Belinchón Yagüe

A true story of the 200-pound beast found dead of a cocaine overdose in 1985 becomes a Hollywood blockbuster

The autopsy produced one indisputable conclusion: the 200-pound male black bear found dead in December 1985 in Chattahoochee National Park (in the Appalachian Mountains of northern Georgia) had died of a cocaine overdose. Near the body of the most common bear species in the United States was a sports bag with more than 66 pounds of cocaine with a street value of over $15 million at the time. The bag had been thrown out of an airplane by a drug trafficker. Strewn around the bear’s body were 40 open and empty packages of the drug. The autopsy report indicated a cerebral hemorrhage, a perforated stomach and all kinds of damage to internal organs. Over the years, the legend grew along with the size of the animal, the drug cache and its value. Now the story has become a Hollywood movie — Cocaine Bear.

Seguir leyendo

Sigourney Weaver: “The Spanish have a special relationship with cinema”

Gregorio Belinchón Yagüe

US actress accepts lifetime achievement award at San Sebastián film festival

“This festival has always had a special place in my heart,” Sigourney Weaver told journalists ahead of the Donostia award presentation ceremony at the 64th San Sebastían International Film Festival on Wednesday morning.

Seguir leyendo

Weaver with J. His Asian heritage meant that casting directors ignored him, and he was experiencing obvious racial discrimination. So, he gave up acting. He went on to work as an assistant director and an action sequence coordinator. Then, two decades later, in 2018, he saw Crazy Rich Asians and thought it was time to return to the other side of the camera. He asked his lawyer-agent, who is also a former child actor, to find a part for him, but that turned out to be unnecessary. Out of the blue, he received an unusual script in which he would play the main character’s husband. Almost three years after shooting the film – the Covid-19 pandemic delayed its release – Quan’s time has come. The actor is a star again. The kid who played Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies is weeks away from possibly winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Liston, the title holder, was a hard-hitting, iron-fisted fighter. Clay had class, style and a big sassy mouth. But he was also a man conscious of his influence and destiny. His friend Malcolm X attended the pugilistic soirée and invited the brand-new champion to his motel room that night: Clay was about to announce his conversion to Islam, his name change (to that of Muhammad Ali, the one beloved by God), and his joining the Nation of Islam, the religious organization that Malcolm X, incidentally, was planning to leave. That night, in that tiny room, they were not alone, they were joined in the celebration by two other friends who were also stars in their own right: the singer Sam Cooke, the soul music icon, and Jim Brown, the legendary running back, who, at the top of his game but fed up with racism in sports, was thinking about retiring and taking a go at an acting career.

Seguir leyendo

James Cameron: ‘Titanic was never motivated by an ambition to sweep the box office’

Gregorio Belinchón Yagüe

The famous film rides a wave of nostalgia back into theaters 25 years after its first release

The RMS Titanic struck an iceberg and sank in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912, killing 1,496 of the 2,208 people on board. The industry required young bodies, beautiful faces, talented people and tireless work, in exchange for huge profits, fame and glory. On the mountain that borders Los Angeles, the huge Hollywood sign advertised a new development. The studios had flourished at its feet: in the 1920s cinema was already the fifth-largest industry in the United States, but that neighborhood of Los Angeles still was home to empty lots, crops and animals. On the other side of the mountain, in the valley, were the orange groves and the immense estates. In that ecosystem, depravity, art and business came together. Many directors, descendants of the original filmmakers who arrived in California, have paid homage to that moment. The latest is Damien Chazelle with Babylon.

Seguir leyendo

Babylon

The war of the superheroes: Will DC disputes give Marvel an edge?

Gregorio Belinchón Yagüe

James Gunn has been tasked with rebuilding the Superman and Batman movie house, but has faced backlash over his decision not to include certain characters in his plans

For nearly 90 years, Marvel and DC have been locked in a battle for market dominance. The race between these two superhero brands has always been close, but infighting at DC appeared to be giving Marvel an edge. He and his friend Jaime San Bernardi, two Mexican kids, arrived there after boarding a cargo ship and crossing the Atlantic; after they got there, they ended up picking grapes in town, an hour away from Madrid. It was the second time González Iñárritu had made the journey by boat. “I had no other way to travel because I didn’t have a penny when I was 19,” he recalls now, sitting in a suite at the Mandarin Ritz hotel in Madrid. Things have clearly changed a lot since then.

Seguir leyendo

Alejandro González Iñárritu, photographed in Madrid.

Tom Hanks: ‘Actors are insufferable, selfish and paranoid’

Gregorio Belinchón Yagüe

The actor is currently promoting his latest film, ‘A Man Called Otto,’ in which he plays a taciturn, lonely retiree. ‘There is a crisis of faith in the future,’ he reflects

Dressed in a dark jacket and white shirt, Tom Hanks, tall and thin since suffering a bad case of Covid-19 in Australia on the set of Elvis, was recently in Spain to promote his latest movie, A Man Called Otto – the Hollywood version of the Swedish film A Man Called Ove, which was nominated for two Oscars in 2016.
