Not all positive cases infect the same number of people – instead, most contagions appear to be linked to specific events and superspreaders. Most infections are caused by a few people, and many positive cases never transmit the disease. This is both good and bad news. On the one hand, it means that if these super-spreading events can be controlled, the number of cases can be reduced without having to lock down the entire country. But on the other, it requires exhaustive contact tracing to connect infected people to where they caught the disease. In Spain, the large majority of cases have not been able to be linked to any known outbreak.

Seguir leyendo

How does artificial intelligence think? In 2024, AI won two Nobel Prizes, one given to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton for laying its foundations and the other given to Demis Hassabis, John Jumper and David Baker for applying it to biology. The five largest companies in the world are all technology companies. The company that designs AI chips, Nvidia, has multiplied its value 27 times over the past five years. But ChatGPT is only two years old, and the AI applications are still prototypes, yet millions of people are already using them. That is where the monster might rear its head.

Seguir leyendo

ChatGPT is only two years old, and the AI applications are still prototypes, yet millions of people are already using them.

SR. It is human, but cheating. Think, for example, of someone saying that he “does not rule out” a new pandemic or that the Cowboys “could” win the Super Bowl. These are empty statements, because it is evident that these events are possible. The difficult thing is to estimate their probability: does the person speaking believe that they have a 1% chance? 10%? 80%? Saying “maybe” or “possibly,” without specifying, is a rhetorical trick to talk about the future without putting your neck out. That’s why probabilistic predictions are valuable: putting numbers to your statements helps to hold you accountable.

Seguir leyendo

Taylor Swift at the premiere of 'The Eras Tour' movie in Los Angeles.

The world is not getting worse, it’s getting better: 35 good news stories to start 2024 with optimism

Kiko Llaneras

EL PAÍS data expert Kiko Llaneras has put together a list of data points that show that — contrary to what we may believe — we are making progress in a number of important areas

To close out the year, I have put together a list of data points — neither exhaustive nor impartial — that involve only good news.

Seguir leyendo

Areso's now classic illustration

Who will win Spain’s national election on Sunday?
